Some may think that transforming a flat surface into something with a lot of mass is difficult, however, I found it fun as well as an easy subject to grasp. Although the construction of part one with the book was extremely tedious, and the gluing of the foam board took a lot of time, the concept for the combination of these projects came easy to me.
For the execution of the book part of the assignment, I immediately was inspired by the radial shape the book made when the covers were touching. This shape to me reminded me of a flower. First i cut the book up into three pieces, but carefully made sure that each of the pieces spine remained. Then I went on to do a series of different folding methods. By rolling the pages in different directions, it added a great deal of volume.
Next was the foam board piece of the assignment. Although this took me a little longer to finalize what I would do, I had a great deal of ideas. I liked the texture as well as volume added by peeling back the layer off the top of the foam. When I peeled off the material, it naturally curled and resembled a wave to me. This is what inspired me to do a wavy sea and ship.
This project was a great learning experience for me. Because I am a graphic design major, I sometimes forget about the 3D forms of art. Although sculpture does not come as naturally to me, I had a lot of fun with this assignment. Not only did this project help me expand my portfolio, but the class in general has.
You have achieved volume and mass through transforming the flat surface of a book and foam board, altering their structure in both cases, and playing with positive and negative space.
ReplyDeleteGood exploration of materials given and interesting research on texture possibilities in the case of your foam board –sea landscape. I believe this is the strongest piece of them both. I am sorry you were absent in the critique. I hope we can discuss the outcome of your process with your classmates in some other opportunity.
Good reaction paper, though research images and sketches are missing and documentation of the processes are incomplete. Final altered book piece is also missing in blog.
