Materials:
Hemp
Wire
Pipe-cleaners
Duct tape
Feathers

Reaction: When assigned this project, I really had no direction of where I wanted to go with it. However, I did want it to be something that had to do with my childhood rather then just some random project for a grade. I began looking around my room for inspiration. I saw lots of materials I could use, but none of them really excited me. Then, I saw a few feather from a past art project. These feathers are what made me think of doing a dream catcher. I was excited to use this material because I love feathers because of what they represent to me: free-spirt and care-free. (I actually have a tattoo of a feather!

Along the way of constructing my three dreamcatchers, I ran into a few different problems. First, I wanted to make the dream catchers out of gathered sticks. However, these were not strong enough, and the frame of the dream catcher eventually broke. Also, I wished that I had of had twine instead of thick hemp because I found hemp as a difficult material to work with. In the end, I really liked how my project turned out. I love the variations of color, size, and number of feathers in each piece.

serial planes part one/two

Some may think that transforming a flat surface into something with a lot of mass is difficult, however, I found it fun as well as an easy subject to grasp. Although the construction of part one with the book was extremely tedious, and the gluing of the foam board took a lot of time, the concept for the combination of these projects came easy to me.

For the execution of the book part of the assignment, I immediately was inspired by the radial shape the book made when the covers were touching. This shape to me reminded me of a flower. First i cut the book up into three pieces, but carefully made sure that each of the pieces spine remained. Then I went on to do a series of different folding methods. By rolling the pages in different directions, it added a great deal of volume.

Next was the foam board piece of the assignment. Although this took me a little longer to finalize what I would do, I had a great deal of ideas. I liked the texture as well as volume added by peeling back the layer off the top of the foam. When I peeled off the material, it naturally curled and resembled a wave to me. This is what inspired me to do a wavy sea and ship.

This project was a great learning experience for me. Because I am a graphic design major, I sometimes forget about the 3D forms of art. Although sculpture does not come as naturally to me, I had a lot of fun with this assignment. Not only did this project help me expand my portfolio, but the class in general has.

Out of the Box Reflective Paper

Anything but a Box

“Think outside of the box.” As a young child and even to this day, my parents and teachers have always been saying this to me. Although it may sound cliché, this quote is what led me to my career in art and also how to live my life. This quote is inspiring to me, but is not the quote in which is the most inspirational to me. “Life is not about finding yourself, its about creating yourself.” On my fridge, I have a magnet with this inspiring quote, and everyday a look at it. Creativity is all about defining yourself and thinking outside the box. Although to some being different might be scary, but to me it is what defines me as a person.

When tackling this assignment, I actually attempted it two different times. First I tried to make an old school boom-box, but was not successful. Although the radios appearance was alright, it did not accomplish the main goal of the project: to build anything but a box. When I went to redo the project, I tried to think of an everyday item that was in no way like a box: immediately I thought food. This time, I used circles made up of various sizes to complete the burger with only a few square shapes.

Throughout the project, I ran into many problems at first. I had difficulty cutting the cardboard and having a successful piece. However, these problems are what led me to a successful second project. I knew what worked, and what did not.

Like any project, this was a great learning experience. Although at first I ran into problems, I ended up learning a lot and having a great time (the second time.) Not only did I learn how to work with a difficult material, but I also was reminded that the more creative I am, the more successful I will be.
